Exclusive Release: ‘Sonic Boom Vol. 3′ (Compiled by Maiya Norton)

Super excited about this new Sonic Boom Vol. 3 that our lady Maiya Norton has masterfully compiled for us this month. It includes some of our favorite jams from the last couple months, including a nice dose of music unlikely on folks’ radars.

The buzz building Denitia and Sene are featured, the venerable Shafiq Husayn shares some love, Wondaland’s newest artist Roman Gianarthur contributes his latest single, and MED’s much loved “Burgundy Whip” with Blu and Jimetta Rose is yet another treat on this free release.

Then we’ve got artists like Ikaz doing a ridiculous flip of Frank Ocean’s “Pyramids,” Philly producer Aeon going in on the sultry Sade sampled “GoodbyeLove,” and LIPS gives a totally huggable performance covering Frank Ocean’s “Super Rich Kids.”

Seravince, Stacy Epps, and Moonchild round out the offering with their sexy mood music, and Josiah Wise closes out Sonic Boom a la the echoey and layered modern chorus in “Gifts for Shitenno.”

Exclusive Video: Jenna Andrews – ‘Covers’ with Maiya Norton

Following the release of her Kiss and Run EP, we caught up with the lovely Jenna Andrews for the second installment of our Covers series hosted by miss Maiya Norton.

Jenna shares where her love for soul music is rooted from, her experience working with legendary producers, what songs she sings in the shower, and boardroom performances. And of course, we share some resonant covers with Jenna for her reaction. As always, we close out with a live cover performance, this time of Jenna’s personally selected cover of Aaliyah’s “Hot Like Fire.” Loving Jenna’s unique spin on this classic.

Shouts to Rashid and Dave for holding down the video production!

Exclusive Release: ‘Sonic Boom Vol. 2′ (Compiled by Maiya Norton) + Download

First time around, miss Maiya Norton blew us away with her selection on our first exclusive release from the Sonic Boom series. While many better known names peppered the the first compilation, on Sonic Boom Vol. 2, Maiya shows us that her musical fluency goes deep and digs up some hidden gems.

Of the artists that folks may be familiar with, Suzi Analogue offers a melodic, lulling instrumental aptly named “TheEndOfTheNite” and our homies The Stuyvesants share another vintage soul epic called “Machine Love.” Other standouts for us are Bay Area electro-soul troupe The Seshen, rapper Eccentric, and Milwaukee producer Haz Solo.

Really, the whole thing plays out beautifully, never quite staying the same in style or tempo yet tying together into a tasteful journey of modern soul, electronic, hip-hop, and dance music.
