‘ETCetera,’ a new NYC party with Ge-Ology and Mark de Clive-Lowe

Words by Korby Benoit

Since my days as a child I’ve always embraced new friendships. As an adult I’m more keen of my innate need to connect with people and exchange ideas. Commonalities usually bring us all together, yet it is through our differences we can evolve and have a rich exchange of information and perspectives.

I enjoy discovering the musical tastes of my friends. And yes, at times I may develop a genuine connection with a  person who simply doesn’t appreciate the same music I do. In those instances all is not lost…or is it? (Remember, music is everything!)

If I’m just getting to know a person and they mention their appreciation for the sounds of Ge-Ology and Mark de Clive-Lowe, I’ll likely have an emotive response to this information. More specifically, an internal signal alerts me that I’m around my artistic kinfolk. We’ll probably enjoy the same events and we might offer each other chunks of musical perspective that we each yearn for, but have yet to discover.

Ge-ology and Mark de Clive-Lowe are both well versed in appealing to an audience through sound. I attended their first installment of ETCetera, a new quarterly event at The303 at Louie and Chan in New York’s Lower East Side.

Rest In Peace, Chico Hamilton

chico

Legendary jazz musician and leader of the Euphoria ensemble Chico Hamilton has passed away.

Coming up as a rising jazz drummer alongside other heavyweights such as Charles Mingus in high school, Chico played with Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, Gerry Mulligan and others, cementing himself as a force to be reckoned with early on.

In 1987, he helped found the New School University Jazz & Contemporary Music Program in NYC, a place dear to many of our hearts.

His ensembles helped develop talent like Gabor Szabo and Larry Coryell, amongst many others. Chico is also credited as an influence for many contemporary talents such as Carlos Santana, Joe Claussell, Jose James, Mark de Clive-Lowe and Thievery Corporation.

Honored as a “Living Jazz Legend” by the Kennedy Center and as an NEA Jazz Master, Chico Hamilton was seminal to the jazz community, culture, and history. Material from his October 2013 recordings with his Euphoria ensemble will be released as the The Inquiring Mind in early 2014.

We are grateful to have had Chico as part of our own history here at Giant Step as well – he will be sorely missed.

The ongoing event series, Celebrating the Life & Music of Foreststorn ‘Chico’ Hamilton will continue on December 15 at Drom in NYC. Come out and pay homage to one of the greats.

Video Premiere: Mark de Clive-Lowe – “Hot Music” (by Soho) + ‘Church’ Album Kickstarter

This fine Monday we are proud to premiere the first of an awesome series by Mark de Clive-Lowe. In what he calls the One Take series, Mark creates music from scratch in just one live film take. The first of the four videos shows the brilliant DJ/producer recreating, remixing, and deconstructing the club classic “Hot Music” by Soho. His tools include a grand piano, drum machine, keyboard and two Korg Kaoss Pads. Join Mark each week as he unveils a new video and continues to awe us just that much more!

We’re also proud to help announce the launch of Mark’s Kickstarter campaign for what will be a Church album! The album, as you might guess, is based off of the inimitable NYC and LA parties by the same name. Contributors to the campaign will have the opportunity to pre-order the album, receive back catalog USB drives, lifetime show tickets for anywhere in the world, private lessons from the man himself, and quite a bit more!
