Having played guitar and acted as backup-singer in Prince’s band, Andy Allo is definitely already on the right track. Earlier this year, Prince charged up his efforts to introduce Andy to the world as a solo artist as she sets up to release her sophomore album, Superconductor. You may also already recognize Andy from the track she did with Blu called “Dreamland.”. While her voice in “Dreamland” is smoother and sweeter, Andy’s new solo style serves up a raspy down home soul from the gut.

Above, find a teaser from her upcoming super funky video for “People Pleaser” above. And below, catch Andy doing a live cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On.” Absolutely adorable she is.

SXSW 2012 Artist Spotlight: Electric Wire Hustle + NYC Show

Electric Wire Hustle is undoubtedly one of our favorite newer acts to hit the scene in the last couple years. Their sound cocoons you in soulful nostalgia all while keeping your expletives in free flow with their unforgettably unique flavor. SXSW brought the New Zealanders several shows, including the Mint Collective x Grown Kids Radio Showcase, where we got a chance to snap a few photos and catch up with the guys.

Self-described as more “painting with oils than water colors,” Electric Wire Hustle’s fluid sound is one of purpose where individuals strengths are recognized and utilized. Citing the opportunity to travel and “sample more than what’s limited to [their] particular portion of the universe” as one of their reasons for making music, the group’s seemingly effortless appeal becomes easy to understand – their music is informed by both the depth and breadth of experience.

Trying to pin down exactly what feeling you get when listening to Electric Wire Hustle can be a bit difficult to describe at times. There’s a familiarity and a newness all at once, and on the first record, an undeniable sense of Marvin Gaye. Per the guys themselves, they share that they ‘don’t necessarily wan’t to be any one thing.’ They explain

“It’s beat driven, it’s Hotere influenced, its Samo before Basquiat blew up, its Kafka after the first chapter.”

Videos: Michael Kiwanuka – “I’m Getting Ready” + Bonus

[kml_flashembed movie="" width="550" height="445" allowfullscreen="true" fvars="fs=1" /]

This guy is bananas. Sounding like a cross between Bill Withers and Terry Callier, Michael Kiwanuka will be opening up for Adele on her U.S. tour. The North London singer-songwriter of Ugandan heritage is a diamond, with vocals that warm your earbuds and subsequently send chills up and down your whole body.

Above is an acoustic video for “I’m Getting Ready,” which was released a couple weeks ago and it’s beautifully soothing. And below, you must absolutely check out the immaculately produced, richly sung instant classic “Tell Me A Tale” (we hear a little Marvin in there).

The I’m Getting Ready EP will be available September 18th. Yes, please.
