Fearless Cover Art_low550

Artist and activist Maya Azucena releases her latest soul-rousing single “Fearless” today having premiered the stream on Essence.com last week. Inspired by the woman’s warrior spirit and a tribute to the women of BeadforLife in Uganda, the song also celebrates the launch of the MAZU Collection, Azucena’s signature line of handmade jewelry in collaboration with BeadforLife. The Davido produced track is available now on iTunes.

BeadforLife’s first signature line of its kind, the MAZU Collection features pieces Azucena helped design using traditional, Ugandan recycled paper beads. Each individual bead is hand-rolled by women in Uganda and the proceeds from jewelry sales empower these women to create sustainable businesses, leaving poverty behind. The line helps to drive BeadforLife’s mission forward, to eradicate poverty and to empower women worldwide.

Video: Maya Azucena – “Dance Revolution” (prod. DJ Spinna)

In partnership with the One Billion Rising campaign to end domestic violence, singer Maya Azucena has just released her new video for “Dance Revolution.” Produced by DJ Spinna, the song aims to instill courage and a sense of community:

“This is for all the babies, this is for all the survivors, this is for all the women – who didn’t have a voice when they needed it. This is for the lost. This is for the found. This is for the warriors -the ones willing to fight, and not stand down. This is for truth seekers and truth bearers. This is for all of us – because what kind if world is it that can settle for 1 Billion of its kind being abused and raped? I shout this out with joy, victory, empathy, and conviction – that we can all, and should all, change this statistic forever and no longer turn away or be silent and allow such atrocity to remain unchallenged. It is time to STOP the madness. It is time for us to own our power to heal this wound in the earth.”

The heartfelt video shows Maya and other women and girls dancing their frustrations away and working towards the courage to build a more peaceful world.

New Track: Maya Azucena – “Come With Me” + Exclusive Interview

Miss Maya Azucena recently released a fresh new tune called “Come With Me.” While catching up about the song, we also managed to get a handful of other great bits into Maya’s world these days. Check out the exclusive interview.

Giant Step: Can you tell us more about the concept of this song and its inspiration? Any background?

Maya Azucena: I wrote “Come With Me” as a flirtatious challenge to someone I had feelings for. There is this intense chemistry between us, yet a huge amount of hesitance to explore it because of the fear of being hurt. My point was to stay in the moment and enjoy each other. I wanted him to just allow me to make him feel good, and this is a feel-good kinda song.

“Come With Me” is produced by music veterans Loslito (multi-instrumentalist and founder of The Rebirth) and Caleb Speir (bassist and co-writer of “American Boy” by Estelle) under the name of their new production team: TRIGO FARE. Their unique brand of organic soundscaping and deeply infectious beats is evident in this first offering as a team.

GS: We heard you went to Russia recently! What was that all about?

Maya: I was recently invited by the U.S. Embassy in Moscow to do a tour of Russia with my band, as Cultural Ambassadors for the U.S.. We did a phenomenal tour of 5 cities in two weeks. Performing about 11 shows in that time, we did two jazz festivals, went to Siberia, sang at a hospital for young people with spinal injuries, walked through Moscow’s Red Square, and received incredible press coverage during our trip

There was a feature on the cover of the World section in The Washington Post and there is this profile piece by MTV Russia, too.
