Loose Ends with DJ Mark Fulla Flava – 4/16

Do you remember Loose Ends from back in the 80s? Me neither. However what with the 80s and 90s firmly becoming the latest wave of retro-chic in music (and everything else), a lot of the old goodies from that period are resurfacing now, like this British R&B trio that crossed the pond in the early 80s and became the very first British export to top the Billboard R&B charts.

Well folks they’re back on the road and Giant Step, with our friends at The Shrine in Chicago, are excited to be showcasing them on Saturday, April 16th, backed by Verzatile and special guest DJ Mark Fulla Flava. Doors open at 8pm, and show starts at 9pm. In the meantime, check out these videos below to get you contemplating.

Jill Scott ft. Anthony Hamilton – “So In Love” & “Shame”

The second single from Jill Scott, “So In Love” featuring Anthony Hamilton, will be released on Jill’s upcoming album, The Light of the Sun. Jill Scott and Anthony Hamilton croon in their best style here: the new single is a soulful, bluesy love song, and yes, there is a spoken word break, which may inspire you. After hearing this sweet new duet, and the fiesty first single, “Shame (ft. Eve),” we cannot wait for the new Jill Scott album this year!

Femi Kuti’s New Release – Africa for Africa + Win Tickets for US Tour

On his album Africa For Africa, released today, Femi Kuti articulates a raw and forceful call to the long tradition of Afrobeat. Recorded in the same studio where he produced his first recordings with his father Fela Kuti and his breakthrough solo album No Cause For Alarm?, Africa for Africa is in several ways a return to Femi’s roots. Deliberately less-produced than its predecessor Day by Day, it aims to present Afrobeat in its roughest, purest form. Femi continues to develop his activist voice on the new album, with the lyrics addressing government oppression and other modern problems in Africa, but the music retains a visceral power.

Sade New Song – “Love is Found”

More greatness from Sade already as another new song from her forthcoming Ultimate Collection. First we got her cover of Thin Lizzy’s “Still in Love With You” then last week we heard a Jay-Z remix of “The Moon and The Sky.” This one brings a surprisingly dark heavy production, maybe a better kind of urban crossover.
