GPWW 3/2/11: Roots Reggae, Serge Gainsbourg & Joe’s Jazz Mix

This edition of GPWW continues its mission of “searching for the perfect beat, each and every week, whether it be new or old music” as Gilles Peterson states again. Inspired by the recent BBC documentary Reggae Britannia, he dedicates a segment to roots reggae music from the likes of Yellowman, Alton Lewis, and Delroy Wilson among others. Later in the show he also dedicates a mix segment to the memory of “the iconic Serge Gainsbourg“, as well as a Jazz mix provided by Joe the producer to cap it off.

Pharoahe Monch New Video- “Clap (One Day)”

[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/VG_iDZbSZ3I" width="550" height="445" allowfullscreen="true" fvars="fs=1" /]

Pharoahe Monch’s video for “Clap (One Day)” is something of a short film, a ten-minute music video directed by Terrance Nance with additional scoring by The Lion Share Music Group. The stretched story-of-a-music-video format has been popularized by Gaga and Kanye, whose videos tend to lead to very altered realities, always centered on the artist. This video on the other hand, is all too real for entire communities.

The video ‘tackles the subject of police brutality’ and tells the story of ‘a police raid gone horribly wrong’ with the kind of acting and violence which might be banned from television. Watch it for yourself and let us know what you think of this poignant video. If you buy the album W.A.R. on iTunes, this crazy video will be included. W.A.R. (We Are Renegades) is coming out on Duck Down Records on March 22nd. [Pre-order on iTunes]

Another lighter track from the new album came up on Soundcloud this week as well:

Daft Punk – TRON: LEGACY R3C0NF1GUR3D Album Coming Soon + Win Tickets to Exclusive Listening Party, Miami 3/11

When the TRON: Legacy movie came out last year, we were beyond excited to be along for the ride, helping to launch the official soundtrack, created by the legendary, pioneering, larger-than-life electro duo Daft Punk. The soundtrack showed a new side of Daft Punk’s music: they gave us a powerful, all-encompassing film score, which was a big leap from their usual dancefloor-shaking tunes.

And now the news we all have been waiting for: the hotly anticipated remix album, TRON: LEGACY R3C0NF1GUR3D will be released by Walt Disney Records on April 5th, including interpretations of the Daft Punk score by artists including Glitch Mob, The Crystal Method, Paul Oakenfold, Moby, Boys Noize, Kaskade, Photek, Pretty Lights and more.

On Friday March 11, Giant Step will host a private event: an exclusive first listen to the TRON: LEGACY R3C0NF1GUR3D album at the Rooftop Pool at Soho Beach House, Miami FL.  There is no RSVP but if you’re feelin’ lucky, enter to win a pair of passes here.
