November Next Step Winner: Britney Stoney

Very excited to announce Detroit singer Britney Stoney as our November Next Step winner! Having learned guitar just two years ago, Britney has made quite the impression on her local circuit playing at coffee shops, clubs, and open mics. Citing Tracy Chapman, Dionne Farris, Erykah Badu, and Lauryn Hill as influences, her sound is primarily soul with alternative, folk, and pop leanings – you may even hear a tinge of reggae or country at times.

Above, we’ve got an awesome live performance video where Britney starts out with an Amy Winehouse cover of “Valerie.” After, she moves into an original piece where she shows welcome hints of Adele in her style. Below, hear another one of Britney’s tracks called “Three.” Heaps of potential with this young lady!

Next Step July Winner: Sean Haefeli

Hella excited about this July Next Step winner of ours! Berlin based pianist, vocalist, lyricist, and composer Sean Haefeli mesmerized us with his vocal jazz that’s sprinkled with welcome notes of Jose James and Gil Scott-Heron.

Others have referenced Last Poets, Roberta Flack, Michael Franti, Bobby McFerrin, and Gregory Porter when speaking about his music. Looks like dude has a pretty fail proof thing going on as far as many are concerned.

Sean’s sound blends jazz, soul, hip hop, and spoken word to birth warm, honest, and intimate music perfect for cozying up to as winter approaches. RISE marks his third album, which similar to his previous two, is self-produced and released. Below, you can stream the entire album and also download the title track for free!

Touring will begin in late October through November of this year. On, November 16 catch a special performance on Mijke’s Middag Live on Dutch radio station Radio 6.

Next Step June Winner: The Broken Orchestra

Our June Next Step winners are quite marvelous, we must say. We actually featured their video for “Closer” with Anna Stott a while back, and totally fell in love with their laid back soulful groove.

The Broken Orchestra is centered around producers Pat Dooner and Carl Conway-Davis, who work in tandem with selected artists and musicians to cultivate their soothing sounds.

After two years in the making, the group just signed to Phonosaurus Records and will be releasing their debut album, Shibui, on October 23rd. The vocal appearances are going to be a real treat with contributions from Moby’s lead singer Inyang Bassey, Natalie Gardiner, Lauren Jade, and Lady Paradox.

Oh, and yeah – we got the exclusive premiere for the first official single from Shibui called “Take Back The Day,” which also happens to be the track featuring Inyang Bassey. Yeah, no big deal. It’s also a free download – holler at the widget below. Beautiful, beautiful music!

Folks can also look forward to tour dates in the pipeline, acoustic version videos, remixes, and instrumentals. Wee!
