GPWW 2/23/11: Nicolas Jaar Feature and dOP Mix

This GPWW features words and music from Nicolas Jaar, an electronic artist based in NY on a French-based label (Clown and Sunset), currently studying at Brown University in Rhode Island. His album was released on January 31st, called Space is Only Noise. While chatting with Gilles about his studies and music, Nicolas mentions that he’s happy to see artists like James Blake getting so much positive attention, because it represents this new, mellow electronic generation in a relatively accurate way. As Pitchfork said about Space Is Only Noise, “The textures and ingredients of Jaar’s music exist in the context of techno– rhythm and repetition are clearly important to him– but Space is not dance music. It’s too slow, sure, but it’s also too diffuse in its methods and results.”

Later in the show, Gilles brings a mix from dOP, going into their jazz box for Yusef Lateef, Horace Silver, Coltrane and more.
