New Release: Meiko – ‘The Bright Side’

One of the fortunate handful of artists to be discovered via MySpace, Georgian folk pop singer Meiko recently released her make-you-feel-all-gooey-inside sophomore album The Bright Side. And yes, her cooing vocal style is definitely reminding us heavy of one of our other favorite gals, Ellie Goulding.

While you may first think Ellie, don’t get it twisted – the sweet toned lass cites a slew of influences that include Patty Griffin, Sade, The Cranberries, Fiona Apple, Indigo Girls, Nina Simone, and Portishead, for starters.

For those unfamiliar, get a taste of Meiko’s sound via the below video for the album’s leading track “Leave The Lights On.” Quite forward lyricism from the sweet young lady – watch out for the nice ones!

Video: Kimbra – “Settle Down” (Live)

What a special treat this lady is. New Zealand born and Melbourne based vocalist Kimbra is more than just a singer, boasting vocal acrobatics against a jazzy, soulful electro-pop backdrop. Just take a little eensie weensie peek at her singlehandedly murdering it at the Spotify Sessions during this year’s SXSW Festival and be rendered speechless – a one woman maestro. And could she be any more adorable? Do they make pocket size versions of her? Please?

Wonderfully shot video, too – really great capture of the mood at the awesome Spotify House (which we had the pleasure of visiting)!

Citing Nina Simone, Prince, and Bjork as influences, can we be any more excited to take a peek at Kimbra’s debut album, Vows that dropped last August? Probably not.

New Track: The Mynabirds – “Generals” + MP3

Fronted by singer-songwriter Laura Burhenn, The Mynabirds are a Nebraska based band with enough attitude for the whole town. On the cusp of releasing their sophomore album, Generals on June 5th, The Mynabirds have released their title track to show you exactly how much business they mean.

Aptly naming the album after a Richard Avedon photo entitled “Generals of the Daughters of the American Revolution,” Generals is a concept album, which Burhenn aims to use as a positive vehicle to exercise her political frustration. Sonically, you can look out for tinges of PJ Harvey, Nina Simone, and David Bowie, with percussion heavy tunes borrowing from hip hop and African rhythms, resulting in a soulful brand of rock reminiscent of The Kills.

paris2-273

Honorary ladybug of the Bugz In The Attic crew, Joy Jones recently recorded an impressive take of Nina Simone’s “Be My Husband,” expanding on Simone’s sparse original. Though the track will not appear on Jones’ forthcoming Godchild album (out July 7 on Future Soul Records), it is true to her future jazz stylings and available for free.
