December Next Step Winner: Sophia Bastian

NY singer/songwriter Sophia Bastian won our hearts late last year when she debuted her first ever video for “Breaking.” Then at the top of the year she dropped her video for her fantastic Portishead cover she called “Gloryboxed” – watch it after the jump. While catching up on Next Step entries, we were thrilled to find that Sophia was entered into our December 2012 pool of submissions.

A background in classic blues and soul paired with her jazz training and love for hip hop, the heights that Sophia is poised to reach are truly exciting. Her tone is rich and her delivery is potent, reminding us a bit of Amy Winehouse at times. We hope you enjoy the sultry “Makes Me Believe” from her upcoming Juvenile Blues EP below.

Look forward to more shows and music soon!

New Release: Meiko – ‘The Bright Side’

One of the fortunate handful of artists to be discovered via MySpace, Georgian folk pop singer Meiko recently released her make-you-feel-all-gooey-inside sophomore album The Bright Side. And yes, her cooing vocal style is definitely reminding us heavy of one of our other favorite gals, Ellie Goulding.

While you may first think Ellie, don’t get it twisted – the sweet toned lass cites a slew of influences that include Patty Griffin, Sade, The Cranberries, Fiona Apple, Indigo Girls, Nina Simone, and Portishead, for starters.

For those unfamiliar, get a taste of Meiko’s sound via the below video for the album’s leading track “Leave The Lights On.” Quite forward lyricism from the sweet young lady – watch out for the nice ones!

Quakers To Release Self-Titled Album

Quakers is a 35 member hip hop collective, which centers around producers Fuzzface, 7-Stu-7 and Katalyst. Fuzzface is known to many as Geoff Barrow of the lauded Portishead, 7-Stu-7 is Portishead’s engineer, and Katalyst hails from Australia rounding out the trio for some massive sound. Peep the tracklisting for Quakers on the Stones Throw website.

Set out to make music they cared about, the producers sought out “genuine collaborators” to form this impressive project. Their hard hitting beats seemed to have done some serious talking with the line up these guys have scored, which includes legends and up-and-comings alike. Amongst the many talents, there are: Prince Po, Booty Brown (The Pharcyde), Dead Prez, Phat Kat, Guilty Simpson, MED, Lyric Jones, Raydar Ellis, and Buff1, just to name a few.

Take a little peek into the release with the stream for “Fitta Happier” with Guilty Simpson below! Look for the album to drop March 27.
