This might be the longest post title ever, but well worth it. Tune-Yards, Angelique Kidjo, Questlove, & Akua Naru came together for a powerful collaboration on a remake of Fela Kuti’s “Lady.” The result = yikes! In the best way possible. You must listen to the stream below.

Above, view a behind the scenes on the making of the track as well as interviews with the artists involved. This song is more than just any other woman loving song – it’s about the power of a woman in any form, of any creed and background.

The track will be part of a new Fela Kuti compilation by by the Red Hot and (RED) organizations called Red Hot + Fela.

Jay-Z Performs At Carnegie Hall

Last night Jay-Z performed the second of his two historic nights at New York’s Carnegie Hall benefiting the United Way of New York City and Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation. We were lucky enough to attend and witness the event – Backed by an orchestra conducted by Jeri Lynne Johnson (of Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra) and the Illadelphonics featuring Questlove and Bilal amongst others.

Jay-Z delivered classics such as “99 Problems,” “Hard Knock Life,” “Run This Town,” and “Empire State Of Mind” with the help of Alicia Keys, of course. Bilal gave us a special rendition of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” before Nas took the stage to join in before going into “If I Ruled The World,” There was also a beautiful rendition by the orchestra of Gil Scott Heron’s “New York Is Killing Me.”

The night was classic New York bringing together tuxedo NY set with hip hop heads, a couple of NY Giants players, Chris Rock (who was celebrating his birthday) and even John Mcenroe (to name a few).

One to tell the kids about for sure.

Remembering The Florida Room As It Closes Its Doors

[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/qo5_ohpFZ8g" width="550" height="445" allowfullscreen="true" fvars="fs=1" /]

This week, a very special venue in the hearts of many (including ours) closed its doors for good. The Florida Room in the basement of Delano Hotel in South Beach Florida was a Lenny Kravitz designed venue with the feel of a classic old school night club.

Within its first year of opening, Giant Step starting doing events at The Florida Room and the list became pretty impressive. Many of our events were Miami debuts featuring great artists such as Jose James, Janelle Monae, Melanie Fiona, and Jazmine Sullivan, to name a few.

Watch the video of Questlove and Gilles Peterson at WMC 2010 as Quest toasts Gilles for being one to go down in history – quite timely to share given yesterday’s news.

After the jump, also find videos from De La Soul, The Roots, and Janelle Monae, all doing their thing at a venue that will be greatly missed.

Here’s a partial list of some of our great nights:

June 2008 – Janelle Monae (Miami Debut)
Sept 2008 – Jazmine Sullivan (Miami Debut)
Oct 2008 – Nikka Costa
NYE 2008 – The Roots and Janelle Monae
Jan 2009 – The Florida Room 1st anniversary with De La Soul
WMC 2009 – Pete Rock, Benji B, Wale, Questlove, Melanie Fiona, Taylor McFerrin
NYE 2009 – Common
WMC 2010 – Gilles Peterson and Questlove

So to all our friends in Miami and of course the great staff of this special venue that had the best cocktails in the world – we salute you and all the good times.

New Track: The Roots – “Make My” ft. Big K.R.I.T. + Album

The Roots have recently announced a new album to release on December 6th, undun. The work will be conceptual and take form of “an existential re-telling of the short life of one Redford Stephens (1974-1999).” Questlove says of the project, “at this point in our career we’d like for our work to have a unifying theme, and an experiential quality.” We can most certainly dig that.

Also with the announcement came a new track entitled “Make My,” featuring none other than southern gentleman Big K.R.I.T.. It’s a sleepy and melodic yet catchy tune. Stream below.
