Roy Ayers is a truly prolific musician. His reach as an artist has been expansive and profound, from his timeless original pieces to the mass influence his music has had over hip hop and modern soul music. The Roy Ayers Project aims to tell the story of this incredible talent through documentary, performance, music, and interviews. Questlove with Chicago Afrobeat Project – 4/23

Good news Chicago, our favorite drummer, producer and deejay Questlove will be rocking the house this Saturday, April 23rd, at The Shrine, with a special early performance from Chicago Afrobeat Project, who are kicking off a 3-month residency at The Shrine it so happens, so keep a look out for more of their shows.

Get there early to enjoy the premiere screening of The Return of Chicago Cool: The Creation of The Shrine. Doors open at 8pm, with viewing of documentary promptly at 8:30pm. All early-goers will receive complimentary admission to Questlove as well as a hosted cocktail bar courtesy of CIROC.

Roy Ayers Documentary + New Albums

Who doesn’t love to see legendary musicians still doing their thing? Roy Ayers is one of those legends. He’s taken advantage of his status in modern music, scooping up a younger audience with his heavily-sampled “Everybody Loves the Sunshine” as well as touring and recording with younger artists.

2011 will see a lot of Ayers. According to his website, he will be releasing three new albums this year, plus a documentary (trailer above) The Roy Ayers Project. Check out an example of the new Roy after the jump, in his video for “Everybody Groovin.”

The folks at Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (PIFA) want to send you on a trip full of free gifts and culture. Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (PIFA) is offering a contest to win a full weekend getaway to see Questlove and the hip-hop dance company Rennie Harris Puremovement, plus an art exhibition by The African American Museum of Philadelphia which looks at African American expatriate artists during early 20th Century Paris.

We give away concert tickets often, but it’s a rare opportunity to giveaway a full-on vacation: this includes transportation, a two-night stay at The Doubletree Hilton, tickets to the dance performance (4/16), tickets to the Questlove performance with Keren Ann (4/17), free admission to the museum exhibit and some free local food.
