GPWW 3/16/11: The Stepkids, Raoul K & Music from Japan, for Japan

This week, Gilles Peterson has words and music from The Stepkids (Stones Throw) and Raoul K, but he made time in between sets to play music from Japan, for Japan. The Japanese joints are simply beautiful, including artists like the Hideo Shiraki Quintet, UFO and Hozan Yamamoto. He also got a quick interview with The Stepkids, self-professed ‘MP3 nerds,’ and a sampling from their new album. A post-genre band, these guys have played as session musicians in different ways – from hard jazz, to R&B, to indie rock and everything in between. The combination they created for their upcoming album is like nothing you’ve heard before. The show ends with a mix from Raoul K, German-based DJ via West Africa, with tracks from King Sunny Ade, Carl Craig, Raoul K himself and more.

Spotlight: KING – The Story

Successful blending of the retro and progressive is not easy. More than a handful of projects trying to accomplish this feat circulate the internet everyday, but only a few do it well. King’s The Story is one these few. The debut three-track EP highlights harmony of three ladies over an amalgam of light guitars, keys, and synths, big drums, tambourines, and pulsating bass without beating us over the head with either the accompaniments or any particular voice. In other words, the group’s wall of sound is more of an entrance than a barrier. I suppose we could all use a bit more supernatural love, and these three tracks played in sequence are a great place to start. Listen on Soundcloud, like them on Facebook, and purchase the EP on iTunes or Amazon.  There’s also a cute cut-and-paste video (above) if you like that sort of thing.

For this week’s installment of the Worldwide radio show, Gilles Peterson starts us off with some “slow burn” instrumental tracks from the likes of Yusef Lateef, and Mystica Tribe originating from Japan. From here, he takes us on a journey through some of the work done by Teebs one of the new prodigies coming out of the electronic scene in Los Angeles.  In this mix from Teebs we find tracks like “While You Doooo” and “Double Fifths” which were released under his current label Brainfeeder.
