New Track: Eric Lau & Oddisee – “What I’d Rather” (Preview)

Unfair is this preview for this new Eric Lau and Oddisee track, “What I’d Rather.” About twelve seconds in, we already knew that we needed to have it all. The mellow tune eases you in with its muffled piano and Oddisee’s effortless flow that caresses and slaps you in the breath – how rude/awesome.

“What I’d Rather” will be available on April 21!

New Release: Zara McFarlane – ‘More Than Mine’ Limited Edition 7″

The elegant British jazz artist Zara McFarlane recently dropped a limited edition 7″ featuring two marvelous jams in celebration of Record Store Day. The first track is “More Than Mine,” starts off with a modest piano backing and then begins a riveting crescendo of a passionate conversation between horns – breathtaking. Second, you can find “Lions Of Chiaroscuro” – a delightful upbeat mash of Zara’s “Chiaroscuro” and the classic “Lions of Judah.” Stream below!

The Stepkids – “La La” & “Shadows on Behalf” + MP3

The Stepkids are the latest signing to Stones Throw records, deviating from the label’s “indie hip-hop” reputation earned with artists like Madlib, Percee P, MED, Doom and Dilla. The Stepkids are made up of three meticulous session musicians who got tired of the back-up gigs (playing on stage for artists like Alicia Keys, 50 Cent and Lauryn Hill) and made this new music in their free time. We were lucky to have them open up for Aloe Blacc last year and they blew us away.  Aside from the main draw which is their fantastic new sound, they also enhance their live show with visuals by wearing all white clothing while standing in front of a white sheet with a projector in front of them. And lots of beautiful swirling colors.

Along with a free download of “Shadows on Behalf,” Stones Throw is offering this stream of “La La,” a track that Gilles Peterson had to rewind in his Worldwide radio show. Gilles had to make sure you heard the quiet lyrics early in the song because it’s such a lovely tune that it’s easy to lose the heavy meaning behind it. Both of these tracks are available on colored vinyl, made exclusively for Record Store Day. Looking like Spin Art, this is the best colored vinyl we’ve seen yet, making good use of those inevitable ink bleeds.

Their debut album will be released in September 2011.

Record Store Day – Tomorrow, 4/16

This is your final reminder: tomorrow is International Record Store Day. Fabricated to boost sales of independent record shops four years ago, this crate-digger’s holiday is becoming larger than life. There are so many exclusive Record Store Day releases that it’s hard to keep track – especially on vinyl, which is particularly sacred on Record Store Day. All that matters is that tomorrow, April 16th, you show your support at your local record store (Bring Money!) And gather ’round turntables and share stories, the way old people used to do.
