Throwback Thursday: Nuyorican Soul Fiesta (Winter Music Conference) @ the Shore Club, Miami – March 24, 1997

*(2013)_19970324

For this week’s Throwback Thursday, Giant Step President/CEO Maurice Bernstein takes us back to the legendary 1997 Winter Music Conference party for Nuyorican Soul at the Shore Club! What do you remember about the epic daytime party? For those that missed it, catch a video clip as well as the backside of the invite flyer after the jump.

Back in the 90s, the Winter Music Conference (WMC) was a global affair where house DJs from all around the world would come and invade Miami for a week. Back then it was purely an industry event, which inevitably also brought out only the most serious of dance music lovers.

For this year particular year, we decided to throw a big daylong event as a teaser for the forthcoming Nuyorican Soul album that we were releasing – the album was of course produced by none other than Kenny and Louie aka Masters at Work.

We held the party at the Shore Club – the “old” Shore Club with the huge outdoor space and pool. It was a largely coveted event. We had a great live set from Luis Quinteros who brought along some local Miami musicians to play with him. Special guests included Roy Ayers, India Arie and of course Louie Vega, and Kenny Dope, amongst many, many others.

Rest In Peace, Don Blackman

Soul great Don Blackman has passed. In addition to releasing his self-titled solo album, the Queens born jazz-funk pianist, singer/songwriter, and producer played with Parliament/Funkadelic, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Roy Ayers.

He also had a hand in the works of many influential pop icons of our age, including Janet Jackson, Sting, 2Pac, and Jay-Z.

Interview: Pete Rock to Play @ Le Poisson Rouge, NYC – June 30

Yep. Pete Rock will be spinning at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC this Saturday, June 30 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Mecca And The Soul Brother.

We caught up with Pete this week for a few questions asking him to look back, share what’s coming up, and let us know what’s good for the big night!

More info on Saturday’s event, including ticket link.

Giant Step: Looking back, what’s your fondest memory from recording Mecca And The Soul Brother?

Pete Rock: Working with Heavy D doing “The Basement” song.

GS: If you had to pick today, what’s your favorite track on the album and why?

Pete Rock: “Reminisce” is my favorite track because it is my tears on wax.

GS: To you, who was Pete Rock then and who is Pete Rock today?

Pete Rock: Pete Rock then was a young, excited DJ and producer trying to reach my goals. Today I am a father, husband, and legend trying to keep hip hop alive.

GS: We know it’s going to be hotness regardless, but what can folks expect to hear at LPR on saturday?

Pete Rock: Everything!!! The music I grew up with that influenced me. A special mix of my favorite songs off of Mecca And The Soul Brother and the music that inspired that album.

GS: Looks like Petestrumentals II is brewing. What’s in store? What can you tell us about the Petestrumentals of 2001 versus this new one?

Pete Rock: Yes, Petestrumentals II is creatively in the works. There won’t a be a huge difference, just a continuation from the first album.

GS: What else is new with you? Any other gems being concocted in the lab?!

Pete Rock: Yes, lots of projects are being developed. First one out this year is the Camp Lo project titled 80 Blocks From Tiffany’s. Working on a DJ Premier vs. Pete Rock project that will come out in late 2013. Also collaborating with Roy Ayers and working with Robert Glasper.
