Staff Picks of 2013

As 2013 nears its end, we continue our tradition of yearly staff picks summing up our favorite music from the 12 months past. This year is very special as we’ve extended our list makers to include Giant Step fam outside of the staff itself; many thanks to Maiya Norton, Nai Palm (Hiatus Kaiyote), Natasha Diggs, Rich Medina, and DJ Spinna for contributing their takes!

Amongst the most popular favorites were Disclosure‘s Settle, Rhye‘s Woman, James Blake‘s Overgrown, and Hiatus Kaiyote‘s Tawk Tomahawk. Dig into the complete lists and let us know your faves as well!

New Track: Rustie – “Slasherr”

Wave after wave of trance synths come crashing down over Rustie‘s signature sub-smashing drums in his new club anthem, “Slasherr” (out now on the Scottish label Nmbrs), which premiered on Annie Mac’s Radio 1 show last Friday. A second single, “Triadzz,” and a vinyl release that will contain both singles are slated for March 18th.

Rustie’s also about to play several North American dates, and is rumored to have 3 productions for Danny Brown‘s forthcoming debut for Fool’s Gold.

Having received praise from Pitchfork and remixed the likes of Jamie Lidell, Kelis, and Nicki Minaj, Glasgow producer Rustie is out with his debut album today. Glass Swords is a heavily experiential electronic album marrying Japanese prog-rock, 16-bit video game sonics, grime, and Detroit techno into what sounds like the future. Above, you’ll find a clip of the title track.
