Words by Korby Benoit

Fatima is a Swedish born vocalist based in London. In recent years she’s earned praise for her work that has spread through the UK’s music scene. Her lush and soulful collaborations with Eglo Records co-founder Floating Points have kept her name abuzz and on May 14th her new album Yellow Memories will be available on Eglo Records.

Along with Floating Points producers Flako, Oh No, Shafiq Husayn, Knxledge, Scoop Deville and Computer Jay are responsible for the album’s sound. I recently spoke with Fatima as she was in London preparing for the album release.

“You make your music and you never know how people are going to feel about it.  It’s always good to hear when people are enjoying it. It makes me happy” explains Fatima.

“The album is called Yellow Memories because I was struggling to find a title. It’s pretty hard. I guess it’s like naming a child. I was thinking about my grandma’s house.  And I was thinking about the past.  The word yellow is because my grandma’s house is actually yellow. That house to me represents my childhood and me growing up in Sweden.” She continues, “I was looking at family photos and it just popped up in my head. It’s me reminiscing of a time that’s been before and that house is kind of a like a symbol of the past. I think the album represents family, love, sunshine and the past.”

New Release: Boardwalk Empire Presents ‘Sounds of The Onyx’ + MP3

soto

HBO TV drama Boardwalk Empire presents Sounds of The Onyx, celebrating the launch of the popular show’s 4th season via remixes of “rare jazz recordings from the Prohibition Era.”

Remixers on the promo project include hip-hop elite Pete Rock, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Om’Mas Keith, Shafiq Husayn, JayCeeOh & B-Sides and Tall Black Guy.

The original recordings that set the foundation for this project come from legends like Eva Taylor & Clarence Williams’ Blue Five, Ethel Waters, Lloyd Scott & His Orchestra, Jim Jackson and Charlie Johnson’s Paradise Ten Orchestra.

The one exception is Pete Rock’s remix of a new recording from the official soundtrack: a cover version of “Sugarfoot Stomp” by Vince Giordano & The Nighthawks, also known as the Boardwalk Empire house band.

The Emmy Award winning series began its fourth season on September 8.

Video: Talia Taylor – “Untitled” (Snippet)

Bay Area emcee, producer, and friend Talia Taylor emerges with a hypnotizing new track she’s currently calling “Untitled.” Underwater synth sounds blended with echoey electro chants set the base for an effortless conversational flow. This particular intersection of hip-hop, electronic, and soul remind us a bit of Shafiq Husayn and Iman Omari – neither being comparisons for the faint of heart.

Exclusive Release: ‘Sonic Boom Vol. 3′ (Compiled by Maiya Norton)

Super excited about this new Sonic Boom Vol. 3 that our lady Maiya Norton has masterfully compiled for us this month. It includes some of our favorite jams from the last couple months, including a nice dose of music unlikely on folks’ radars.

The buzz building Denitia and Sene are featured, the venerable Shafiq Husayn shares some love, Wondaland’s newest artist Roman Gianarthur contributes his latest single, and MED’s much loved “Burgundy Whip” with Blu and Jimetta Rose is yet another treat on this free release.

Then we’ve got artists like Ikaz doing a ridiculous flip of Frank Ocean’s “Pyramids,” Philly producer Aeon going in on the sultry Sade sampled “GoodbyeLove,” and LIPS gives a totally huggable performance covering Frank Ocean’s “Super Rich Kids.”

Seravince, Stacy Epps, and Moonchild round out the offering with their sexy mood music, and Josiah Wise closes out Sonic Boom a la the echoey and layered modern chorus in “Gifts for Shitenno.”

New Track: Ilhame – “French Kiss” ft. Rapper Big Pooh

Been awhile since we posted about the French-Moroccan singer Ilhame.

First was Bob Marley cover with Ky-Mani Marley, and this time, Ilhame speeds it up on the coy new track “French Kiss” featuring Rapper Big Pooh. This is going to get stuck in our heads, easily.

Sit tight for more music that’ll stick to your ear just as nicely with her upcoming album, Just Wish It, which includes collaborations with T3 of Slum Village, Nicolay, and Shafiq Husayn, amongst others. We’re definitely with it.
