Alex Cuba’s self-titled album drops today in the US, through his label Caracol Records. Alex has been building up to the release this week with shows at New York’s Highline Ballroom and Rockwood Music Hall, and tomorrow he embarks on his North American tour. Featuring surprising new grooves, innovative electric guitar inflections and varying tempos and structures, Alex Cuba is an important step in Alex Cuba’s ongoing musical revolution.
The singer-songwriter hails from Artemisa, Cuba and resides in Smithers, B.C. (14 hours north of Vancouver). Musically, he lives everywhere in between. His trademark sugarcane-sweet melodies, pop-soul hooks and rock chords subtly subvert commonly held notions of what Cuban music is. ”Caballo” (Horse), a Cuban-funk-rock track and the album’s second video, was conceived and produced in Smithers, Canada. Other highlights are “Solo Tu” (Only You), a moving, mid-tempo rock ballad, “Tierra Colora” (Red Soil), a samba-rock-surf-punk sizzler and the funked up “If You Give Me Love“, his first-ever song in English.
