GPWW 5/4/11: Worldwide Family Mixtape: United Vibrations + Bumps Vol. 4

We’re very happy to say that The Bumps are back. (This might be the only occasion for which that phrase can be used sincerely.) ‘Now That’s What I Call Bumps,’ the series Gilles Peterson recently introduced to highlight new-era producers, is back with a fourth installment. That means the tracklist this week includes Jon Phonics, fLako, Eskmo, Spaven, and the highly-hyped Tyler the Creator.

This week’s show also includes a Worldwide Family Mixtape out of the UK from United Vibrations, whose debut album Galaxies Not Ghettos is now available for pre-order (CD, vinyl or digital) on Bandcamp.

GPWW 4/27/11: The First ‘All Winners’ of 2011

This is a massive 60-track collection of the best Gilles Peterson approved music released so far in 2011 – from heavy modal jazz, to indie hip-hop, to the new wave of electronic production, on which we don’t want to slap a label yet. Only the best in this edition, as every ‘Worldwide Winners’ show goes. The first hour includes an Jamie XX Remix of Adele, FaltyDL, Addison Groove, Thom Yorke with Burial & Four Tet, Dimlite. Gilles gives the Best Album of the Year title to James Blake. Later he pulls out some more GPWW staples: Jamie Woon, The Stepkids, Prommer & Barck, Cubic Zirconia, and somehow he moves from Radiohead into Chris Brown. It’s another not-to-be-missed episode of the worldwide show, All Winners 2011 special.

GPWW 4/20/11: Worldwide Family Mixtape – Austin Peralta

This week’s show starts out with a track by the recently-deceased drummer Steve Reid, who Gilles Peterson started a foundation for on behalf of struggling musicians. The GPWW radio show moves quickly after that with some Roots, plus more great music by Morgan Zarate, Jack Soul, Riton and Hefner.

Then we get into the special mix from the latest Brainfeeder signing, a new LA-based pianist named Austin Peralta. He plays a nice variety of tunes alongside his own songs, including Bjork, John Coltrane, J Dilla, Archie Shepp and more. Gilles finishes off the show with more Coltrane (never enough ‘Trane) Sun-Ra, Bobby Hutcherson, Tortoise, Moloko and Arthur Russell.

GPWW 4/13/11: Now That’s What I Call Bumps Vol 3 + Erykah Badu Mix

This week brings back the new head-nodding portion of the weekly GPWW radio show: Now That’s What I Call Bumps. Introduced to the show a few weeks ago to highlight the new generation of ‘unclassifiable’ producers, Bumps spoiled us quick, so last week its absence from the show was sorely missed. Thank goodness volume three is in this episode; the Bumps are here to stay.

As if that weren’t enough, the special worldwide mix is provided by none other than Erykah Badu. For past events, she has gone by the DJ name Low Down Loretta Brown, but here she explains to Gilles modestly that she wouldn’t call herself a DJ, rather a selector.
