New Release: Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – ‘Bulletproof Brass’

The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble consists of eight brothers from the south side of Chicago. Raised in a musical family where they’d be woken at 6am before school for music practice, music truly runs through their blood. Having worked with numerous talents from De La Soul and Prince to The Gorrillaz and their father, legendary trumpet player for Sun-Ra, Phil Cohran, you guys are in for a real treat. Check out the preview for their Bulletproof Brass EP that just dropped and get lifted.

GPWW 4/20/11: Worldwide Family Mixtape – Austin Peralta

This week’s show starts out with a track by the recently-deceased drummer Steve Reid, who Gilles Peterson started a foundation for on behalf of struggling musicians. The GPWW radio show moves quickly after that with some Roots, plus more great music by Morgan Zarate, Jack Soul, Riton and Hefner.

Then we get into the special mix from the latest Brainfeeder signing, a new LA-based pianist named Austin Peralta. He plays a nice variety of tunes alongside his own songs, including Bjork, John Coltrane, J Dilla, Archie Shepp and more. Gilles finishes off the show with more Coltrane (never enough ‘Trane) Sun-Ra, Bobby Hutcherson, Tortoise, Moloko and Arthur Russell.

Distant Relatives Video: “Patience”

Since Nas & Damien Marley got together for Distant Relatives, they’ve finished with their events and appearances, took a trip to Jamaica, and released singles from their self-titled album, starting with the amazing “As We Enter.”  “Patience” comes with a Sun Ra vibey video, which fits nicely in the global scheme of Distant Relatives and their ideas.

The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble Pays Tribute

FULL SCREEN
The Sounds of VTech / Hypnotic Brass Ensemble by Mochilla

The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble teamed up with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson in LA for this live event, which sold out quickly and brought support from artists like Aloe Blacc and Madlib. Miguel Atwood-Ferguson played viola and wrote this arrangement of “Scrabble” specifically for the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. It’s a jazz song by Rene Costy, which inspired Dilla to create one of his best-loved tracks.

The enthusiastic crowd of music lovers that packed their way into the Echoplex for this special show and were not disappointed by the magic they witnessed. Exclusive music, top quality sound, and a stunning performance. Thanks to VTech Music and Mochilla for the video.
