stafflistbanner2013d

As 2013 nears its end, we continue our tradition of yearly staff picks summing up our favorite music from the 12 months past. This year is very special as we’ve extended our list makers to include Giant Step fam outside of the staff itself; many thanks to Maiya Norton, Nai Palm (Hiatus Kaiyote), Natasha Diggs, Rich Medina, and DJ Spinna for contributing their takes!

Amongst the most popular favorites were Disclosure‘s Settle, Rhye‘s Woman, James Blake‘s Overgrown, and Hiatus Kaiyote‘s Tawk Tomahawk. Dig into the complete lists and let us know your faves as well!

Matt Martians and Syd “The Kyd” of the Odd Future crew comprise The Internet. The duo has just released their sophomore album, Feel Good featuring live instrumentation and a bold jazzy soul sound. To boot, some of our favorites are collaborators, including Yuna, Jesse Boykins III, Thundercat, and Chad Hugo.

In case you missed it the first time, watch the video below for “Dontcha” to get a taste!

Video: The Child of Lov – “Give Me”

So funky. The Child of Lov earlier this month released his cheeky video for “Give Me,” a tune blending elements of soul, blues, and funk, and some good ol’ raw charm.
According to Potholes In My Blog, the upcoming album is set to include Damon Albarn, DOOM, and Thundercat, amongst others. If this is any indication of what’s to come, we certainly can not wait.

The first weekend of Coachella 2012 has hit its conclusion and man, what a bar it has set. Above, catch a crazy video of a Tupac hologram performing “Hail Mary” and “Gangsta Party” on a mind-blowing onstage collaboration with Snoop Dogg. Live performance effects just got that much more serious, y’all.

Below is the video from an incredible performance by SBTRKT, which follows with our other favorite Coachella 2012 performances so far after the jump – Tune-Yards, Florence & The Machine, Frank Ocean, and The Black Keys.

Other performers this weekend included A$AP Rocky, AraabMUZIK, Azealia Banks, Beats Antique, Bon Iver, Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg, Feist, Fitz and the Tantrums, Flying Lotus, Gary Clark Jr., Justice, Kaskade, Kendrick Lamar, M83, Metronomy, Nero, Radiohead, Santigold, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, The Shins, The Weekend, Thundercat, and Wallpaper, to name just a little handful.

Video: Jogyo – “Rude Boy”

Jogyo is Sanskrit for “pure thoughts or stillness among action” – action is right. We are still vibrating from the awesome chaos that is Joygo’s “Rude Boy,” some sort of spellbinding electro dancehall dream.

Throw M.I.A., Santigold, and a little bit of fairy dust in a dirty basement party with some crappy speakers and maybe we could explain it. Love it.

Listen to the b-side, “Thundercat,” below!
