Remembering Whitney Houston, RIP

At only 48, one of the most prolific voices of our time has been lost. Having paved the way for so many soulful pop divas to follow, Whitney Houston came to become a truly unforgettable figure in our culture.

It is heartening to hear that she was reported to be in good spirits in the days preceding her passing. And that’s the Whitney we’ll remember: radiant.

In between jamming to old tunes and videos, also consider taking a look at a set of Whitney’s ‘most memorable interviews’ as per The Huffington Post.

Below you can view Jennifer Hudson’s heartfelt tribute to Whitney at the 2012 Grammys.

Remembering Gil Scott-Heron

As most now know, the great Gil Scott-Heron passed away late last week. The revolutionary poet, musician, and author has been a long-time favorite of Giant Step, having played many of our earliest shows under the Groove Academy banner in the early 90′s. The image headlining this post is the flyer from our 1992 show. After the jump, you’ll find a few more vintage Giant Step concert flyers from shows we’ve done with Gil; you are welcome to download the flyers and add them to your collection.

Our friends at The Revivalist have put together a beautiful post detailing Gil’s journey and his contributions along the way. We encourage you to give it a read – the man’s influence and reach is both expansive and inspiring.

We would like to leave you with a lovely one-hour mix by Twit One entitled, A Salute to Gil Scott-Heron.

Event Recap: The Village Voice on The Annual MLK Tribute with Questlove & MC Yameen Allworld

Big thanks to Puja at The Village Voice for covering our Annual MLK event, DJed this year by Questlove and MC Yameen Allworld.

Party anthems and silly humor aside, at its best, the night made us remember exactly what we were celebrating. The most touching moment for us came at the onset of Aly-Us’ house anthem “Follow Me”: Basked in flecks of gold light from the disco balls above, the entire club sang along to a chorus of “Why don’t you follow me/To a place where we can be free,” prompting even those headed for the door to linger. “Can we stay through the end of this song?” we heard the girl next to us ask her friend. “I feel like we need to be here for this.”
