Jamie XX’s Solo Debut, “Far Nearer,” Out Today

Jamie XX from the famed band, The XX, released his first single today. “Beat For” sounds like a chopped up moonwalk, while “Far Nearer” goes from lullaby to tropical dance party – nothing boring there. Not too long ago, Jamie collaborated with the late Gil Scott Heron on a remix album for I’m New Here, entitled We’re New Here. It’s also rumored that the young chap will be featured on Drake’s new album.

We’re very happy to say that The Bumps are back. (This might be the only occasion for which that phrase can be used sincerely.) ‘Now That’s What I Call Bumps,’ the series Gilles Peterson recently introduced to highlight new-era producers, is back with a fourth installment. That means the tracklist this week includes Jon Phonics, fLako, Eskmo, Spaven, and the highly-hyped Tyler the Creator.

This week’s show also includes a Worldwide Family Mixtape out of the UK from United Vibrations, whose debut album Galaxies Not Ghettos is now available for pre-order (CD, vinyl or digital) on Bandcamp.

Magnetic Man – “Perfect Stranger” ft Katy B Video + New Release

The big name in UK dubstep at the moment is Magnetic Man, particularly known for the hit featuring Katy B, “Perfect Stranger.” The US debut of their self-titled album was released digitally in April but the physical copies will be out next week on the 10th. Magnetic Man’s Benga, Skream and Artwork are three producers/DJ’s with serious dubstep credentials who met over a love of pulverizing beats at the now-defunct mecca of the genre, Big Apple Records. Together, Magnetic Man infuses the dubstep landscape with melodic pop grooves that play counterpoint to hyped-up synth and fat bass lines that apply pressure like silky-scaled boa constrictors.

You can stream Magnetic Man in its entirety at Popmatters or In Your Speakers.

Breaking through the age of auto tune, On a Mission not only showcases Katy B’s impeccable song writing abilities, but also her raw vocal talent.  In pop diva tradition, Katy takes the most fresh underground sounds and turns them into catchy club hits.  On a Mission has not been released in the US but will be soon.

Mo Kolours – Free “Biddies” MP3

Mo Kolours has released this free track “Biddies” as a sampling of his upcoming EP, Drum Talking. A recently featured producer on the famous Gilles Peterson World Wide radio show, Mo Kolours has a growing reputation in the UK. This beguiling, otherworldly record sees him drawing heavily on the ‘sega’ music of his ancestral island homeland and uniting it with dub, soul and various electronic styles to create intriguing new combinations.

Biddies is a house-not-house bumper, driven by Mo Kolours’ crafty vocal manipulations, percussion and chants. This is a unique record announcing a very unusual talent.
