New Release: Hiatus Kaiyote – ‘Tawk Tomahawk’ + US Tour Dates

Hiatus Kaiyote is the sound of serendipity. On their debut album Tawk Tomahawk, the band strikes the perfect note merging poetry and polyrhythms.

Singer songwriter Nai Palm was the gravitational force that crystallized the vision for Hiatus Kaiyote’s brand of future soul, and this influence is evident on the track “Nakamarra,” which references the majestic red earth that Nai Palm roamed as a child. “Lace Skull” explores what it is to be vulnerable. “To have courage to share is a powerful thing,” says Palm, and “that song lyrically was about the celebration of showing flaws and inner most vulnerability.” Q-Tip lends his voice for a collaborative verse on the track that is featured exclusively on the re-released album.

Born in Vancouver, BC and raised between South Africa and Canada’s West Coast, Zaki Ibrahim spent her life moving between two culturally diverse worlds, culminating in her debut album, Eclectica (Episodes In Purple). Her music is captivating and vibrant, thick with poetics and steeped in a delicious mixture of earnest emotion and social commentary.

I had never worked with water instruments before, like a Rainstick and the Udu, and it brought an ancestral/tribal tinge to the song.”

Expect the unexpected as Zaki begins her US tour June 9th.

The 13th album and Stax Records debut from internationally-renowned singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Teena Marie, Congo Square (out June 9th) marks a deeply personal milestone for the iconic soul music star and Rhythm & Blues Awards Lifetime Achievement recipient.  In support of the album, she begins her US tour today in Washington D.C. at the Constitution Hall.

“Each song I was coming up with began to sound like the style of some favorite artist of mine from the past… Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye, Billie Holiday, the old Chicago soul of The Emotions and the new Chicago vibe of Kanye West… Ice Cube’s bumpin’ in the trunk vibe and of course, Rick James. It’s all in there.”  Along for the party are special guests Faith Evans (on the first single “Can’t Last a Day”), Howard Hewett (on the steamy duet “Lovers Lane”), MC Lyte (on the sexy opener “The Pressure”) and others.

Congo Square is a nod to all that came before and to the ones who will follow in her footsteps, firmly reiterating the obvious: there is only one Teena Marie.
