Video: Cut Chemist’s Vinyl Collection (Crate Diggers)

    September 27th, 2012

This is a pretty damn awesome interview with Cut Chemist, detailing the history behind his collection of 35,000+ records. Many of his records live in a converted horse stable in LA, where about 15,000 of the collection resides (many others are at his mama's house, whom he apologizes to). His filing system is bananas and insanely impressive - the man is about his business.

The Chemist shares about his musical baby sitter and how his mother escorted him along his first record digging trip. And how it was like, so way uncool to have moms helping you dig, man.

Folks can also hear the story of "The Big Dig," which was a Brazilian crate digging trip made by Cut Chemist, Madlib, Egon and Babu (Beat Junkies) and J. Rocc.

“We turned that country upside down. We changed the whole infrastructure of their economy just based on how many of us there were. It was like they brought in the army. Here comes the American DJs. It may have been the most amount of records I bought in one trip.”

Some really great moments in hip hop history all throughout this piece. Love love love it!

Mo Kolours – Free “Biddies” MP3

    April 18th, 2011

Mo Kolours has released this free track "Biddies" as a sampling of his upcoming EP, Drum Talking. A recently featured producer on the famous Gilles Peterson World Wide radio show, Mo Kolours has a growing reputation in the UK. This beguiling, otherworldly record sees him drawing heavily on the ‘sega’ music of his ancestral island homeland and uniting it with dub, soul and various electronic styles to create intriguing new combinations.

Biddies is a house-not-house bumper, driven by Mo Kolours' crafty vocal manipulations, percussion and chants. This is a unique record announcing a very unusual talent.

Record Store Day – Tomorrow, 4/16

    April 15th, 2011

This is your final reminder: tomorrow is International Record Store Day. Fabricated to boost sales of independent record shops four years ago, this crate-digger's holiday is becoming larger than life. There are so many exclusive Record Store Day releases that it's hard to keep track - especially on vinyl, which is particularly sacred on Record Store Day. All that matters is that tomorrow, April 16th, you show your support at your local record store (Bring Money!) And gather 'round turntables and share stories, the way old people used to do.
