Considered one of the “big three” current jazz guitarists, along with Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell, John Scofield has played and recorded with the likes of Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Charles Mingus, Mile Davis and more. A master of Jazz improvisation with a sound that blends post-bop, soul jazz, funk and blues styles, it only seemed fitting that he would team up with groove-based jazz group, Medeski Martin & Wood on 1997’s ‘A Go Go.’
Returning to play with the trio after 9 years, Scofield joins Medeski Martin & Wood on ‘Out Louder,’ a record that showcases the quartet’s penchant for jazz, funk, rock, soul and reggae. Recorded in under a week at Shacklyn, MMW's fabled downtown Brooklyn studio, "Maybe 60% was improvising and writing together," recalls Martin. "We have a typical MMW style which is going into the studio without knowing what we are going to do. We tried a lot of different ideas with John, but the best things seemed to come out of improvisation." And in this age of studio wizardry, that only makes ‘Out Louder’ seem even more refreshing of an album from the boys of Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood.
