Gnarls Win Two Grammys In 2007

Posted by Jay Yee, Feb 12, 09:45 AM EST

Last night at the 49th annual Grammy Awards at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Gnarls Barkley, who performed during the show, stood up and took a bow not once, but twice, for both Best Alternative Music Album for St. Elsewhere and Best Urban/Alternative Performance for "Crazy." For their perforamance, Cee-Lo and Dangermouse did a slowed down rendition of their pop hit dressed as pilots with a 16-piece backing orchestra. Other nominees we were hoping to win an award were Corinne Bailey Rae, KT Tunstall, and Nelly Furtado. Corinne’s nomination categories (Best Song and Best Record) were unfortunately against heavy mainstream competition and ended up losing to The Dixie Chicks, who swept the awards with 5 victories.

More notable achievements came from John Legend, Joss Stone and Van Hunt for their version of Sly And The Family Stone’s "Family Affair," combining to collect best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals. And the late great jazz maestro Michael Brecker (R.I.P.) was recognized for best Jazz Instrumental Solo on "Some Skunk Funk." As with most awards shows, this one was so heavily hyped and anticipated that only a handful of favorites were bound to make history.
