Martin Scorsese finally took home his first ever Oscar last night after a winless record during his four decade long career. Having previously been nominated 7 times (5 for direction, 2 for screenplay), Scorsese surprisingly never produced work that was deemed worthy of the trophy despite the commercial success of his last movie, The Aviator (2004). Best known for Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and Raging Bull, it’s perplexing as to how this award had eluded him all these years. During his acceptance speech he reflected, “so many people over the years have been wishing this for me — strangers. And I’m saying thank you.” Truly appreciative and not embitter by his past “failures,” Scorsese said "I'm glad it's taken this long. It's been worth it."
As for the best soundtrack category, the Oscar went to Argentinean composer Gustavo Santaolalla for Babel. A true deity among mortals in the soundtrack world, Ennio Morricone also received an honorary Oscar. And Melissa Etheridge won for best song in An Inconvenient Truth. However, there were no real winners in that category this year – if you know what I mean.
