Ever since recovering from a near fatal spinal cord injury (SCI)in 1982, the famed black male solo singer Teddy Pendergrass ("Come On And Go With Me", "Turn Off The Lights," and "Close The Door") founded the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance (TPA), a non-profit organization aiding those affected by SCIs. Teddy has organized a regal black tie gala called Teddy 25: A Celebration of Life, Hope and Possibilities on June 10th 4pm at the Verizon Hall in Philadelphia, commemorating his life changing incident while raising funds for the TPA. Guests of honor include Ashford & Simpson, Regis Philbin, Radio One Founder Cathy Hughes and more with appearances by Patti LaBelle, Bill Cosby, Stephanie Mills, Philadanco, and many of "Philly's finest neo-soul artists." Acress and comedian Mo'Nique will host the event, and Teddy, the don of the night, will perform a special encore.
Said Teddy, "From personal experience I recognize a strong need for a coordinated outreach to individuals with SCI that will encourage them to reach their maximum potential and that's the mission of The Teddy Pendergrass Alliance. It is important that those of us with SCI continue to LIVE and are given the right to LIVE as individuals in the way that we choose, and that society recognizes that people with SCI are people, not conditions or diseases."
