Beggars Group, a massive conglomerate of Matador, 4AD, XL Recordings, Playlouder, Too Pure, Mo' Wax among others, recently acquired Rough Trade records, an imprint plagued by unfortunate financial losses. Since late 2006, Sanctuary Group - then owner of Rough Trade - had considered selling said label, and now Beggars Group has come to the rescue of Rough Trade, while Univeral records has taken over Sanctuary Group.
Geoff Travis of Rough Trade commented, "this liason will finally give the label the kind of stability, dynamism and expertise that will allow us to grow on a worldwide basis." Partner in the deal Martin Mills of Beggars added in agreement, "it was impossible to resist the appeal of combining Rough Trade's amazing musical heritage with ours. Adding them to everything that's going on here for our existing group of record labels is a very exciting proposition."
