Giant Step ‘06 has been far from scant with presenting its share of quality live shows and events, and now we’re pleased to announce that we can’t – and just won’t let the party stop!
Keeping with the momentum of last week’s killer Coldcut show at Irving Plaza and Brooklyn native DJ Spinna’s scorching house/soul set at Cielo, take a look at what’s in line for the upcoming summer months:
May 23 24 – RAHEEM DEVAUGHN
Check out DC’s Raheem DeVaughn, the “R&B Hippie Neo Soul Rock Star,” as he begins the “NY Live Experience” -- a series of live performances across New York City in support of his acclaimed debut album 'The Love Experience' (Jive). Tonight he will be performing at Harlem Grill and tomorrow night at SOB’s with the lovely Vivian Green.
May 25 – NICOLA CONTE
We will be heading back to Cielo this Thursday to host an exclusive appearance by Italian producer-jazzman, Nicola Conte – This will be his 1st appearance in over 5 years! An evening of pure jazz rhythms, bossanova, electronica and then some…!
May 30 – NUYORICAN SOUL SESSIONS 1
In the spirit of the “Nuyorican Soul” launch party in 1997 at The Supper Club, this night is set to be an instant classic to be logged into the history books of Giant Step! Dance Ritual and GBH will join us in presenting Nuyorican Soul Sessions 1 at Hiro Ballroom to feature a rare NY appearance of Louie Vega & Kenny Dope together as Masters at Work along with Sacred Rhythm’s Joe Claussell of Body & Soul Fame, plus a very special LIVE performance by Luisito Quintero as he performs selections from his debut album, 'Percussion Maddness' (Rapster/BBE) – highlighting re-creations of hits by the late great Tito Puente, Ray Barretto and Fela Kuti! Also in the house will be special invited guests: Blaze, Anane, Francis Mbappe and more! Ladies and Gents – Get your party dresses and suits for this night definitely to be remembered!
June 1 – ORIN “AFRONAUGHT” WALTERS / BUGZ IN THE ATTIC
Orin “Afronaught” Walters of UK’s Bugz in the Attic will kick off the Bugz crew residency in NYC – puttin’ it down with his widely known broken beat and gritty West London style.
MID-JUNE - RAHEEM DEVAUGHN
Just in case you miss him in May or want to feel 'The Love Experience' again, Raheem will be performing at multiple locations:
14-Jun Cutting Room
15-Jun J&R Summerfest
16-Jun Joe's Pub
17-Jun The 5 Spot (Brooklyn)
18-Jun Village Underground
20-Jun SOB's
21-Jun The Apollo Theater
July 2 – SUMMERSTAGE w/ SEU JORGE & CUT CHEMIST
Following our 15 Year Anniversary event last year with the Brazilian Girls, Femi Kuti and DJs Nickodemus and Smash, we’ll be sure to jumpstart the fireworks this 4th of July weekend with Brazilian musician and actor Seu Jorge (City of God), upcomers - Jose Gonzalez, afro-cuban Alex Cuba Band and finally Cut Chemist of Jurassic 5 on the 1’s and 2’s. This event is free and open to the public (3-6pm) – but of course, early arrival is not only recommended but required in order to ensure entry for this one!
Aug 10 – RIVERROCKS w/ Lyrics Born, RJD2 and Alice Smith
Giant Step and Rehage Entertainment team up to present live music on Pier 54 (13th Street and Hudson River), bringing together exciting faces of hip hop and soul: half-Japanese American and half Italian-American MC, Lyrics Born, Ohio native producer, RJD2 and the up and coming rock/soul queen, Alice Smith. This event is also free and open to the public.
Aug 23 – MATTHEW HERBERT BAND
UK’s Matthew Herbert crosses the Atlantic to perform with his full live band at Irving Plaza. Let’s be clear this isn’t just a DJ set – Herbert will be in town with his inventive BAND to promote his latest CD, 'Scale' (!K7).
Sept 7 – RAINER TRUBY
Germany’s own, Rainer Truby - known for his DJ skills and productions under the name Truby Trio - will be gracing the decks in NYC, for the 1st time in three years!
These are just slices of confirmed happenins’…. There are plenty more dishes waiting to come out of the Giant Step kitchen! Stay tuned and be sure to bookmark our events page (www.giantstep.net/events) to be up on all that we’re cooking up!
