Best known for fusing Brazilian samba music with Western genres, Brazilian composer, Gilberto Gil is looking to call it quits. Having won multiple Grammys, the 64 year old composer believes that he has accomplished all that he has and is now looking to enjoy just getting old. While he hopes to still continue his role as Brazil's Minister Of Culture, his 5 decade long career looks to be coming to a close. But I'm sure we haven't seen the last of him.

With seemingly every label cashing in on their back catalog through remixed versions of classic tracks, from the Verve Remixed series, Motown Remixed, Re-Bop: The Savoy Remixes, Blue Note Revisited, Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass Rewhipped and more, it all seems to be getting a little stale. But everytime I think that, another remix album comes out that keeps me interested.
This time around, Legacy Recordings decided to revisit the recordings of Nina Simone during her RCA Records period....

Nublu transports the larger part of its Avenue C family to Brooklyn for an outdoor Labor Day party right on the Gowanus Canal. Kudu blows up the stage with their big bass. Love Trio featuring Jesse Murphy from Brazilian Girls, Ilhan Ersahin from Wax Poetic and Kenny Wollesen power through driving dance-jazz. Forro in the Dark , whose November album will feature David Byrne, Bebel Gilberto and Miho Hatori (ex-Cibo Matto), bounces everyone into the water with their modern...

Everyone at Giant Step and in NY music and club community were saddened to hear yesterday about the death of Adam Goldstone. He was a great DJ, lover of life, truly original character and a good friend. We will miss him very much.

With as much bravado she has displayed leading up to the release of her debut album 'Public Warning' (October 17 via Def Jam Recordings), it has come to be expected that things aren't always done the normal way when it comes to Lady Sovereign. In this case, for her first single, "Love Me Or Hate Me," it is set to be a download only release through Verizon Wireless. The song will also play as the soundtrack of the company's campaign to promote the Chocolate LG phone. Sorry Cingular, Nextel and...

Putting together any type of compilation is always difficult if not a bit frustrating. But when the task is to put together a 4-disc box set of funky tunes, leave it to Rhino Records to take on the task to produce 'What It Is! Funky Soul and Rare Grooves (1967-1977).' Due out on October 3rd, this 4-disc box set features 91 tracks taken from the vaults of Atlantic, Atco, and Warner Bros. Records. Arranged chronologically, this box set contains more than five hours of music with everyone from...

According to SOHH, it looks like Peedi Peedi of State Property has been asked to join The Roots crew and he has accepted. Having collaborated with the Roots on the track "Long Time" from The Roots latest album 'Game Theory,' Peedi Peedi may join The Roots for a few shows to see how things go. While nothing is official yet, if it it does indeed happen, he will join Black Thought as the band's second emcee. The more the merrier I say.
