Born and raised in Leeds, England, Corinne Bailey Rae got her beginnings in music singing in church, where the choir alternated between traditional hymns and wilder worship songs. The experience broadened Corinne’s tastes and when her youth leader offered to buy her an electric guitar she grabbed the opportunity, quite literally, with both hands. So began her love affair with making music and she soon developed a healthy appetite for one of the most innovative bands that rock and roll had to offer: Led Zeppelin. Later working as a hat-check girl at a nearby jazz club, her love for noisy indie fare evolved to more soulful, solo terrain, turning her into an artist that Q Magazine said ”for once, won’t be hemmed in by the genre’s limitations...by year end, she will be everybody’s soul siren of choice, and rightly so.”
Inspired as much by Björk and Massive Attack as Jill Scott, enchanting singer-songwriter, Corinne Bailey Rae, delivers a self-titled debut that, in her own words, has "a little bit of everything: it's chilled out, acoustic, kooky, atmospheric and soulful.” From the dreamy, wistful drama of “Enchantment,” the languid piano-led “Choux Pastry Heart,” or the sublime blues delivered “Like A Star,” Corinne Bailey Rae’s voice effortlessly pins you, in the softest but most persuasive of ways, to the wall. Full of tiptoeing delicacy and wraparound warmth, Corinne Bailey Rae’s debut will have even the most causal listener, realizing that this is something special.
