release description

Citizen Cope, known on his birth certificate as Clarence Greenwood, was born in Memphis, but started to garner attention in the mid-90s when demos of his unlikely mix of folk, hip-hop, soul and rock were eagerly passed around the D.C. music community. Years of hard work paid off when his RCA debut and sophomore album, The Clarence Greenwood Recordings, was released in 2004 and showed the world the brilliant simplicity of the artist. Citizen Cope was seemingly everywhere, thanks in part to “Son's Gonna Rise” being featured in a distinctly memorable Pontiac commercial. In fact television and film, soundtrack supervisors liked him so much every song from the album was licensed numerous times. Cope hit the road for 16 months following the album release and fervor for his live shows, combined with tremendous word of mouth created the legions of dedicated Cope supporters awaiting his new album.

Every Waking Moment continues Cope's deep exploration of the world that confronts us every day. In the sweeping, driving “Brother Lee,” he pulls us all in, wherever we are, from “Brooklyn USA to a tinsel town where now the Dodgers play.” He wrestles with the man in the mirror in “Back Together” (“Been stuck in the middle of a vendetta between me and myself”) and pleads with the ones he loves in “Somehow.” And even when Cope sings about politicians “ordering the killing of innocent civilians,” as he does on “John Lennon,” there's still the background chant of “without you I've been all alone.” It's the sound of Cope connecting with himself, connecting with the one he loves, and most profoundly, connecting with the listener.

"Memphis-born Clarence Greenwood, aka Citizen Cope, delivers his most personal record yet on his third album, a diverse collection of grooves that is equal parts blues, folk, funk, and soul. Look out kids, we've got a hot one!" — Rolling Stone
