Norah Jones's soulful, smoky voice leads the way as she conjures the sounds of jazz, blues, folk, pop and country music on Not Too Late, her most personal record to date.
Bursting upon the pop music scene with her auspicious debut, Come Away With Me released in 2002, Norah dazzled the world with her intoxicating voice and timeless composition. Selling a massive 20 million worldwide and almost 10 million copies in the U.S., she swept the Grammy Awards in 2003. Her sophomore release Feels Like Home continued the trend by mixing piano jazz and singer/songwriter-style tracks and moving over 4 million units at home and 10 million overseas. Both albums were overseen by legendary producer Arif Mardin, who sadly passed away in June 2006.
Not Too Late, produced by Lee Alexander, Jones' long time bassist and songwriting partner, displays a self-assured maturity, with songs that range in tempo and style. For the first time, The 27-year-old Jones sings a full assortment of her own compositions that plumb the depths of emotion with subtle levity and probe the mind-set of living in a troubled world. For instance, on "Wish I Could," there's a reference to a former lover sent off to war. The track has a swaying melancholic beauty played in waltz time, with Jeffrey Zeigler from the Kronos Quartet on cello. Then there are gems like "Until the End," conceived on an island in the South Pacific on a rainy day during a tour break. The Wurlitzer-vibed, sweet-beauty "Thinking About You" was written with Ilhan Ersahin of Wax Poetic whom Norah was playing with after she moved to NY. Although there are some songs like the dark-clouded, dream-shrouded "My Dear Country," the premise of the album is hope. “That's why the album is named Not Too Late,” adds Norah Jones. “I liked the positive message."
