22-year-old British singer/songwriter James Morrison's voice might sound like he has scarred vocal chords (he had a terrible whooping cough as a baby), but there is no denying it makes the color of his voice unique. Listen closely and you can spot traces of Rod Stewart in his Gasoline Alley prime, Joe Cocker, Bob Seger and even Stevie Wonder. Fans all over the world have fallen in love with Morrison's voice and sales globally hit 1 million for his debut album Undiscovered. This is no small task considering that he wasn't even signed until a few years ago. Once signed, he was promptly put in the studio with producer Martin Terefe (KT Tunstall, Ron Sexsmith). Undiscovered debuted at #1 on the U.K. charts last year, remaining there for several weeks and spawning two Top 5 singles. Life might be sweet for Morrison now, but he stays very much grounded - he lived through a poverty-stricken and troubled childhood, and he taps into his upbringing on several songs on Undiscovered.
The album kicks off with the psychedelic Traffic-blues vibe of "Under the Influence' and the romantic lead single "You Give Me Something." His voice harkens back to John Lennon in the violent, gnarled "(I Want You) She's So Heavy" blues of "Call the Police." On "Wonderful World," an ear-opening dark yin to the yang of Louis Armstrong's original, Morrison reveals: "And I know that it's a wonderful world/But I can't feel it right now." Morrison is not shy of being brutally honest with his lyrics, staying true to himself. That's perhaps why he turned down an opportunity from Hollywood producers who wanted to use his song "The Pieces Don't Fit Anymore" for a major studio motion picture. "Dreams can come true," sings Morrison on "If the Rain Must Fall," "If you know inside you really want them to." Listen up because Undiscovered offers conclusive proof of that.
