release description

A cornucopia of psychedelic madness, Noisettes are a band of accidental anti-conformists upturning popular music culture. Fronted by the tempestuous Shingai Shoniwa, a leg-kicking vocalist and bass guitarist with a penchant for Native-American face paint and cat-like leaping at performances, the London-based art rockers come full force with thundering drumming courtesy of Jamie Morrison and crunching metal guitars by Dan Smith. Formed in 2004 when Shingai's dreams of an acting career were shanghaied by Dan's self-indulgent plans for his father's blues band, it wasn't until Jamie joined that the group's early jazz-noise gigging landed them a 4-track EP entitled the Three Moods Of The Noisettes. The triad began to garner attention for their onstage theatrics and post-modernist take on punk rock. Surprisingly, Shingai's voice ranges from power lung blasts and squeals of a typical rocker to the unexpected tender vocals likened to former Morcheeba member Skye or Macy Gray - a thrilling hybrid placing Noisettes in a class of their own.

After three years of studio tweaking and endless touring of the UK, Noisettes are releasing their full-length debut, What's The Time Mr. Wolf? The opener and band anthem, "Don't Give Up" is an exhilarating stomper and one hell of an introduction. Next comes the prog-rock influenced "Scratch Your Name." The first sign of Shingai's soulful side appears on "The Count of Monte Christo," an acoustic song set in a minor key. "Sister Rosetta," a knee-slapping jive, closes out the introductory block of the album, which had been previously released as singles. Shingai's voice shines best in "Iwe," a tense emotional builder, ending in heavy guitar riffing. The album closes with a secret track, "Never Fall In Love Again," a downtempo melody featuring a folk duet with Shingai and Dan. Despite their conventional guitar-vocals-drums setup, Noisettes have rethought punk, injecting it with a healthy dose of soul.
