release description

Sachal Vasandani is a uniquely gifted vocalist and songwriter who combines skillful, diverse writing with a flair for infusing the familiar with the fresh. In an era where young male singers believe that trying to channel Frank Sinatra is the play-it safe road to success, Vasandani instead strikes a chord as an original that evokes integrity as a songwriter. Versed in the blues, standards and modern jazz, Vasandani sings with a relaxed, mature sound and a unique sensibility. Recognized as a semi-finalist in the 2004 Thelonius Monk Institute Competition, Vasandani, a Chicago raised jazz aficionado, cites jazz great Shirley Horn as a major influence.

Vasandani’s debut album, Eyes Wide Open is a twelve-song collection straddling the fine line between jazz and pop. Guest artists Stefon Harris, Marcus Printup and Doug Wamble add freshness to Vasandani’s trio, which has been performing together since 2001. In addition to his own songs, the album, produced by esteemed bassist- bandleader John Clayton and veteran staff producer Al Pryor, consists of cover tunes previously performed by Sade, Iron and Wine, and Brazil’s iconic songwriter Antonio Carlos Jobim. Tracks to pay special attention to include “Send ‘Em Up To Heaven” (inspired by 9/11), “Please Mr. Ogilvy,” a straight-talking number about an artist’s desire to be supported, and the radiogenic single, “Naked As We Came.” The best part of Eyes Wide Open is its ability to reach jazz fans as well as fans of singer/songwriters like Norah Jones, Liz Wright and Jamie Cullum. Currently based in New York, Vasandani says this city is the perfect place for his creativity to thrive. “I’m connected to a bit of the jazz scene, but there’s also such a cross-pollination of different kinds of music here.” Sit back and prepare yourself for a relaxing blend of songs from an artist we are likely to hear a lot more from.
