release description

Here are the things you need to know about Leslie Feist in order to fall in love with The Reminder: In a past life, she was a shouty battle of the bands teen queen in a Calgary punk band. She made bashful indie boys swoon with her brash riffs, playing guitar with Toronto rock band By Divine Right and fronting her shout-out indie rock defining Broken Social Scene. She's been placed in the role of unlikely fashion icon - she's a tomboy who doesn't really do make-up. She breathed life into surreal sock puppets alongside her electro-trash BFF Peaches in Berlin. Onstage, she can deftly pivot from band leader to solo singer, captivating a room with just her guitar. You can hear all of this on The Reminder, and in some ways it's more Feist than anything she's done before.

Feist and her talented comrades, Gonzales, Mockey, Jamie Lidell, and Ron Sexsmith hung out in their pajamas making The Reminder. She shivered through a one-off effort outside a studio in Toronto's Danforth neighborhood, succeeding in capturing Canadian birds in song for folk ballad "The Park." "Brandy Alexander" has a sucker-punch melody tumbling over a kick drum heartbeat. The jangly Dusty In Memphis teen dream paean "1234" follows in the same 1-2 groove of the album's single, "My Moon My Man." With perennial collaborator Gonzales, she came up with "Limit To Your Love," an ominous slow-burner in which Feist becomes Nico over hard, soul piano chords and Moe Tucker percussion. Live favorite "Sea Lion Woman," which covers the famous traditional chant by Nina Simone, got propelled into the stratosphere with cell phone sounding synths, handclaps and a backing mini-gospel choir. Every facet of Feist - the punk kid from Calgary, the Toronto indie rock poster girl, the Parisian ex-pat who taps the cobblestone - on this album is a reminder of "how her heart behaves."
