Following the success of Bitter:Sweet's debut album 'The Mating Game,' anticipation has been steadily growing for 'Drama.' In fact, the self-produced album's first single, "The Bomb," is the theme song for NBC's popular television comedy, "Lipstick Jungle."
Of their sound, Kiran Shahani, one half of Bitter:Sweet says, "We've taken elements from the remixes and incorporated them into our live shows." That live sound comes through loud and clear on 'Drama.' "Drink You Sober" is filled with jazzy, dark intonations, while the throwback swing of "Sugar Mama" respectfully nods at Koop's recent work in nuevo electro-jazz. And the dream-like voyage of "A Moment" - with Halligan's playfully seductive whispers, "Don't let go, I am only here for a moment" - is a movie in itself. Yet Bitter:Sweet can heat things up at will. The hard stabs of "Get What I Want" and the intense, luscious hook of "Waking Up" make heads and hearts bang alike. Credit Shana Halligan's dexterous and impassioned vocal capabilities as much as Shahani's keen ear for cadence and production. The marriage is truly a splendid one, as is their ability to choose excellent studio and live musicians to complete their ever-evolving format.
Any success story is never without a little bit of what this album title states, however. As Halligan says, "There seems to always be a lot of drama in our lives, somehow. In any life filled with passion and love, there’s bound to be drama." How we handle the drama will define how we experience life, love and our innumerable passions. Listening to Bitter:Sweet, one realizes how enjoyable our dramas can be, and how having a little bit of faith in music can overcome them all.
