release description

Amplify, progressive reggae band John Brown's Body's sixth studio album, is an explosive release featuring twelve tracks of drum & bass-heavy, dub-inflected electro-grooves that exemplify the JBB sound. Amplify has a forward-thinking, fearless approach to tempos, beats and harmonies that expands the genre of reggae as a whole. The album showcases the group's broad palette of influences - from classic UK reggae of the 70’s to West African instrumentation, from indie rock to spaghetti westerns. The music also reflects various artists that lead singer Elliot Martin drew inspiration from while writing Amplify, including Sigur Ros, Batch, Toumani Diabate, Sly and Robbie, Radiohead, Talib Kweli, Aswad, Funkadelic, King Tubby, Roots Manuva, Masaru Sato and, of course, Midnite (whose lead singer, Vaughn Benjamin, lends a vocal to the end of the rootsy “Speak Of The Devil”). Use of instruments like the African kora and cello on the track “So Aware,” and the hip hop influences all over songs like “Shake The Dice” and “Make Your Move” continue an evolution of sound that could be heard on JBB’s two previous recordings, and is now front and center on this release. Meanwhile, recent live showstoppers like “Give Yourself Over,” “Zion Triad,” and “Push Some Air” are a welcome reminder that John Brown’s Body are ready to rock their fans like never before.
