release description

Whether missing in action or abducted, we'll never know, but New Zealand soul sensation Fat Freddy's Drop are back with sophomore album, Dr Boondigga & The Big BW. Straight out of the lab and getting rave reviews around the world the seven piece band are returning to what they love best: jamming live. This digital DJ promo gathers together "Big BW" from the new album, "Ernie" from their debut album Based On A True Story, "This Room" from a live recorded 7", as well as "Bluey" from the Hope For A Generation 10" vinyl. This fall, the collective embark on an Album Shakedown Tour, playing Melbourne to Manchester and touching down in Los Angeles for their American headline debut.

Fat Freddy's Drop shake loose with Dr Boondigga & The Big BW, to be released on their own independent label The Drop, after two years of beat reduction and sonic fine tuning. Of the band's Album Shakedown Tour in support of the full-length, DJ Fitchie at Freddy's mission control in Lyall Bay says audiences can expect tracks from Dr Boondigga & The Big BW, some classics and would you believe - fresh experiments direct from Freddy's beat kitchen.

Fat Freddy's Drop is particularly excited about the American headline debut at The Roxy on Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. The touchdown follows numerous requests from fans that have escalated since the band played five years ago as part of the Detroit Electronic Music Movement Festival and collected the moniker of hi-tek soul. It'll also be a wicked party to celebrate the release of Dr Boondigga & The Big BW.

Catch Freddy's trying to escape Dr Boondigga's lair in their new music video Freddy's online TV channel www.fatfreddysdrop.tv.

"Blissfully epic jams. It's impossible not to love Fat Freddy's Drop. Classic of spirit and sound but still contemporary, their loose-limbed upbeat jams of ska, soul, reggae, dub and electronic flourishes rise to the next level on this second LP. 4 1/2 Stars." — DJ Magazine

"The New Zealand soul collective became world-beaters on the back of their 2005 debut, Based On A True Story, and live shows lauded for their improvisation and intensity. This second album has the same infectious mix of retro-soul and dub reggae, heavy with brass and fronted by the silky falsetto of Dallas Tamaira." — The Guardian

"'Big BW' airs another new direction, with its trippy broken beat/nu-soul feel rather reminiscent of D'Angelo, while 'Boondigga' is an affectionate homage to producer Willie Mitchell's classic Memphis soul sound, best heard on Al Green's mid-70s albums...This is a satisfyingly roosty, late-summer soundtrack, which could make it onto many an end-of-year list." — BBC
