Moroccan-born, Parisian-bred songstress Hindi Zahra makes her American debut with Handmade (Digital release Sept. 26 / CD release Oct. 11). Taking the Prix Constantin (France's Mercury Prize) in 2010, Handmade has already capture audiences worldwide with Hindi's sultry yet delicate melodies. Part blues, part folk, and a dash of gypsy, her songs exhibit the myriad of colorful influences of Hindi's past and present. Channeling the ghost of Billie Holiday, she stakes her claim with her thoroughly original music alongside the likes of Norah Jones, Adele, and Sade.
Enter to win Hindi's 'Handmade' CD
The self taught composer produced and arranged Handmade in its entirety. The first single, "Beautiful Tango," is a smoky love ballad with a whistle-along melody. An homage to her heritage, "Imik Si Mik" (Little by Little) and "Oursoul" are sung in her native Berber tongue. "Set Me Free" sings like a hymn, featuring an impromptu performance by Hindi's inventive mom, who suggested plastic bags be used as the percussion. Melding soul, folk, and jazz, the ever versatile Hindi has crafted her own soundtrack with south Moroccan roots, riding the cusp of African culture.
Hindi will be touring the US for the first time this Fall in support of Handmade, beginning Sept. 30 in Los Angeles, continuing in Portland, Seattle, and Chicago, and culminating in the performances at CMJ in NYC.
