Fruitmeat Records (formerly Fondle'em Records) is Bobbito's latest music venture to explore the boundaries of dance music. Between his critically acclaimed Vibe Magazine column, his WKCR radio show with DJ Lord Sear, and his classic Stevie Wonder Tribute and APT parties with DJ Spinna, Bobbito is known worldwide for exposing progressive up and coming artists from all genres.
Giant Step is proud to present Fruitmeat Records' newest 7" release from The Spanish Harlem Orchestra (their full length cd "Un Gran Dia En El Barrio is available on Ropeadope/Atlantic). The tiny neighborhood of Spanish Harlem produced international Latin Jazz legends Tito Puente and Willie Bobo. It also created 60's Boogaloo and changed the sound of Salsa in the 70's forever. Bobbito was partly raised in Spanish Harlem as a kid, and his father Ramon Garcia was a local Latin Jazz Vibe player. Knowing Bobbito's love for Latin Music, Ropeadope approached him about licensing singles off the album for vinyl release. It was a natural partnership. The first single features "Mama Guela" (mambo) and "Pa' Gozar" (cha cha cha). Led by world famous pianist and arranger Oscar Hernandez, The Spanish Harlem Orchestra is a long overdue missing link to the music and history of Spanish Harlem, and a return to the sound of the glory years of 70's Salsa. Whether you are a seasoned Salsero or a first-time Mambonik, The Spanish Harlem Orchestra will prove that today is always "un gran dia en el Barrio."
