Soul singer Raheem DeVaughn sounds equally inspired by the gospel sounds of the church and the street funk of hip-hop. The newcomer possesses a falsetto voice like the one that made women swoon and pass out at Marvin Gaye concerts yet his range is way beyond ballads. 'The Love Experience,' Raheem's first record for Jive, touches on raw soul, delta blues and the sounds of Sunday sermons. The sweet and sensual "Guess Who Loves You More" and the psychedelic drama of the title song may bring about seventies flashbacks, but DeVaughn makes the decade sound sultry and mellow. His new single,"Believe" combines folksy guitar elements with pained stories of the soul.
"Having sopped up influences from his mama's record collection
(Earth, Wind & Fire, Marvin Gaye) and ajob at Tower Records in D.C.,
(where he was exposed to the progressive grooves of Radiohead and
Coldplay), DeVaughn takes an eclectic musical approach. From the
boogie bounce of the first single, "Guess Who Loves You More," to the
pop guitar blare of "Cadillac" to the string-heavy romance of "Breathe,"
the album showcases a hybrid of styles." - Michael A. Gonzales, —

Every year the critics are ready to proclaim the death of soul music. Moaning to one another...
Nevermind the long ride on the D train from Brooklyn to Harlem, but being late for Raheem...
