Suffrajett is on fire. On their self-titled EP CD, the energetic ensemble delivers sweet pop tunes like Blondie and captures the raw rock sound of Nirvana through rowdy songs, searing vocals and hook-filled anthems. The Chicago afro-punk band's funky garage rock is the perfect match for "it" girl Simi's powerful vocals. The singer rasps and gasps and releases her emotions in songs like "Mr. Man" and "Shake Your Heart," fighting for liberation from the establishment. A no-joke 17-minute rollercoaster ride, the Suffrajett EP is pure rock and roll, impossible to ignore.
The group came together in the dark and dirty underground art rock scene that is unique to New York City. Simi started the group with Jason Chasko, a guitarist who co-wrote Liz Phair's whitechocolatespaceegg album. Kevin Roberts and Danny Severson round out the troop holding down the rhythm section with hot bass licks and pounding drums respectively. At their most recent CMJ showcase in NYC the band rocked it hard, sonicially assaulting the crowd with fierce live energy.
