release description

Featuring vocals from Jon Spencer, Robert Owens, Roots Manuva and more, Coldcut return to deliver their first proper album in 8 years that sees the duo once again acknowledging no musical boundaries.

Most people come into music, do the same thing for a few years, slowly sink back into obscurity and spend the rest of their life collecting publishing royalties and re-forming for tribute tours. The problem with Jonathan More and Matt Black of Coldcut, is that despite their veteran status, they act like two unruly children who just won’t sit still. From running a record label (Ninja Tune), hosting radio shows (Solid Steel), experimenting in multimedia projects (Hex, Gridio) and recording albums (Let Us Play, Re:volution), Coldcut has had a long and illustrious career that is as diverse as the music they create. Music has always been at the forefront of their career and after 8 years, Coldcut return with their long awaited and most varied album to date, Sound Mirrors.

With guest vocalists ranging from Dom Spitzer to Amiri Baraka, Sounds Mirrors is as diverse as Coldcut’s career. Lead-off single, “Everything Is Under Control,” guests Jon Spencer (of “Blues Explosion” fame) and rapper Mike Ladd revving up a chugging hip-hop rock template that nods back to classics like “Beats & Pieces” while giving them a raucous, contemporary edge. On “True Skool,” Roots Manuva drops a heavyweight performance, obviously reveling in Coldcut’s grasp of the interface between the classic and the bubblegum. “Man In A Garage” sees John Matthias give a beautiful, low key, folk-edged performance. And the soon to be summer 2006 dancefloor hit, “Walk A Mile In My Shoes”, features the legendary Robert Owens on an epic, building, hands in the air, push-up-ya-lighters tune that amply demonstrates the duo’s understanding of pop music but also its interface with rave’s euphoric sweep. Continuing to refine and develop both their musical skills and their style, Coldcut can honestly claim that their new album, Sound Mirrors, is their best, most complete album to date, utterly contemporary and as fresh as the day they started. We couldn’t agree more.
