Giant Step celebrated 25 years at its annual SummerStage event in New York's Central Park on August 8th, 2015. The party featured Quantic, Gilles Peterson, and Afrika Bambaataa getting people on their feet to music spanning over 30 years.

Sunday, August 11th, 2013 we presented our annual SummerStage series in Central Park which saw the best attendance yet with over 6,000 people turning out to see Hiatus Kaiyote, Jose James, Shuggie Otis, and DJ OP! All the artists put on brilliant performances leaving an the crowd captivated. Amongst the crowd were Salaam Remi, DJ Spinna, Jesse Boykins III, and TK Wonder.

In the old days when albums were released, part of the marketing included an EPK (electronic press kit). This was normally a VHS tape that was used as a marketing tool. This video includes footage from the photoshoot, music video for “Runaway,” and insights from Masters At Work and musicians featured on the album like Roy Ayers, Tito Puente, George Benson, and Jocelyn Brown.

Giant Step’s infamous Supper Club party was featured in this MTV documentary offering a rare insight of the vibe of the club plus a live performance from Repercussions.

 
Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool was hailed as Time Magazine’s 1994 Album of the Year. One of the first projects to explore the impact of AIDS upon the African American community, the CD features collaborations between old school jazz performers and contemporary hip hop artists. A documentary film focusing on the impact of AIDS on communities of color was broadcast on PBS in tandem with the album release, and released on home video.

Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool Documentary 1994

This is the documentary in full that features performances and interviews with Donald Byrd, The Roots, Guru, Ron Carter, The Pharcyde, Digable Planets, MC Solar, and many more. The live concert was produced by Giant Step at Supper Club and the house band was Groove Collective. The documentary, directed by Earle Sebastian, originally aired on PBS and was to raise AIDs awareness.

Sometime in late 1992, we were approached to have the Giant Step musicians write the theme for the popular MTV show, Yo! MTV Raps. Here’s a clip of the late Tupac, who was still performing with Digital Underground at the time, performing “Keep Ya Head Up” from his second album, Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z.

Footage of a young Tupac (who was then part of the Digital Underground crew) performing his track “Keep Your Head Up.” The live band was made up of the Giant Step regular musicians. This was a classic example of how the sound of the club and hip-hop were influencing each other.

 
Dana Bryant, with her stunning poetry and performances, caught the eye of artists all over the world. The late British guitar player Ronny Jordan, who was having success with tracks like “So What,” asked Dana to co-write a track called “The Jackal” for the follow up to his first album, The Antidote, called The Quiet Revolution .

Dana was managed by Giant Step and was asked by UK guitarist Ronnie Jordan to write lyrics on an instrumental he’d composed. The result was the stunning track “The Jackal.”
