Gilles Peterson Prepares for the World Cup

March 19th, 2010

The first GPWW of March 2010 is a new format. The playlist is broken into eight groups — musical brackets if you will — corresponding to countries participating in the FIFA World Cup 2010. Thirty-two national football teams, sixty-four matches, and something tells us that Gilles will not miss a single one.  This week’s show is perfect evidence that these playlists are truly worldwide. In it you will find a a track from each of the thirty-two countries, carefully selected with a little help from Twitter friends.

Mr Day Video: “Tears of Joy”

March 17th, 2010

Mr Day is known as the singer of French jazz combo Metropolitan Jazz Affair and The Dynamics, plus a frequent featured vocalist for artists like Boozoo Bajou, Patchworks and Mr. President. “Tears of Joy” sounds like The Who playing in homage to Smokey Robinson. That’s the direction Mr Day has taken for his much-anticipated solo album, Small Fry, a record full of pure soul music from suave to edgy and raw, but always with the elegance Mr Day carries so uniquely, making him the most British of dandies on French soil.
